"Sunsparks" is a word I made up years ago; it means those fiery quick realizations that accompany and illuminate moments of reflection.

Here you will find some of these. You will also find some of my writing and thoughts about writing, both current and rather old. It is a rather random selection: some poetry, some musings, some excerpts of fiction, sometimes just the effluvia and the ephemeral illuminating sparks that escape my effervescent mind.

Currently revising Abomination.

Otherwise, working on two projects: a memoir (tentative title: Confessions of the Devil's Spawn: A Transgender Unitarian in America--provocative much???) and a massive revision of Aldamia's Heart.

Completed novels:

Abomination (was: Parkland)

The novel Abomination tells what happens when moody, suicidal sixteen-year old Jonathan Cooper decides not to kill himself but instead to go public with his lifelong secret: that he is really a transgender girl named Julie. This revelation causes all sorts of firestorms in a tiny NH town. The lunacy is whipped up by reporters, by fundamentalist ministers and their followers, and ultimately by a right wing, anti-gay candidate for President who believes, quite correctly, that he can score political points using Julie as a whipping post in the run-up to the NH primary. Though she does have many local supporters and friends, there are also a lot of people--including students--who are against her. And when she is viciously attacked and cannot remember the details of the attackers, it is up to her best friends, a sympathetic reporter, a minister, and her parents to figure out what the police seem unable to: who did it?

Aldamia's Heart

Aldamia's Heart tells the story of a fifteen year old suburban Chicago girl whose family are part of the most powerful witch coven in the world. Ella, unfortunately, is a misfit: she can't seem to do anything right, and her summers at St. Aldamia's school are rife with misadventures. This particular summer finds her and her friends, along with her parents, her headmaster, several dragons, and a teacher, battling against a dark force from the past that has returned to threaten the very foundation of the magic upon which they all rely.

Sunspark Place

Sunspark Place drops us into the lives of the Sunsparks, a suburban family with an absolutely bizarre name (left over from a youthful experiment with peyote and some money for legal documents) consisting of a teacher/writer, a struggling artist, two teenage girls, several cats, and two twenty-somethings in the basement known as "the Subterraneans," who live with an ancient, arthritic, incontinent miniature dachshund called The Great God Odin. The craziness and the poignant moments of their lives are the stuff of this episodic novel.
